Description

Apple Crumble is a warm, comforting dessert perfect for cozy nights. It features tender baked apples spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a buttery oat crumble that bakes to a golden, crunchy finish. Serve it warm with your favorite ice cream or whipped cream for a classic treat that’s easy to make and irresistibly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 5-6 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
  2. Mix Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Toss until the apples are evenly coated, then pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  3. Prepare Crumble Topping: In another bowl, mix together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold cubed unsalted butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish, covering the entire surface for a perfect baked crust.
  5. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the crumble is browning too quickly, loosely cover with foil to prevent burning.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and ensure oats are certified gluten-free.
  • Choosing tart apples like Granny Smith gives a nice balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • To prevent the topping from burning, tent the dish with foil during the last 10-15 minutes if needed.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
  • Adding a pinch of ground ginger or cloves can enhance the warmth of the spices.
