Description

This classic green bean casserole combines tender green beans with a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy French fried onions for a comforting side dish perfect for holidays and family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce and Beans

  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup (cream of chicken works well too!)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 5 (14.5 ounce) cans of green beans, drained

Topping

  • 2-3 cups French fried onions (such as French’s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the casserole evenly.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a 13×9 inch baking dish, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and drained green beans. Stir everything together until well mixed.
  3. Bake Base: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 25 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to heat through.
  4. Add Topping and Finish Baking: Remove the casserole from the oven, sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the top, then return it to the oven. Bake for an additional 5 minutes to crisp and brown the onions.

Notes

  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom for a slightly different flavor.
  • Drain the canned green beans well to prevent the casserole from becoming too watery.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to the mix.
  • Use fresh green beans if preferred; blanch them before mixing.
  • The topping should be added only during the last 5 minutes to keep it crispy.
