Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound Ground Meat (beef, lamb, or turkey)
- 1 medium Onion (finely chopped)
- 4 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 1 tablespoon Ginger (freshly grated)
- 2 medium Green Chilies (slit)
- 2 medium Tomatoes (chopped)
- 1 cup Frozen Peas (optional, or diced potatoes)
Spices and Seasonings
- 2 tablespoons Cooking Oil (vegetable or canola)
- 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 tablespoon Coriander Powder
- 1 teaspoon Cumin Powder
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1 teaspoon Garam Masala
Others
- 1 cup Water
- 1 tablespoon Cilantro (freshly chopped)
Instructions
- Heat oil and cumin seeds: Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds to release their aroma.
- Sauté onions: Add the finely chopped onion to the pan and sauté until golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add aromatics: Stir in the minced garlic, freshly grated ginger, and slit green chilies. Cook this mixture for 2 to 3 minutes until fragrant.
- Cook tomatoes: Incorporate the chopped tomatoes and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until they soften and break down into a sauce.
- Brown the meat: Increase the heat to medium-high, add the ground meat, and brown it thoroughly for roughly 10 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Spice it up: Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt to the pan. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes so the spices fully blend with the meat.
- Add peas and simmer: Stir in the frozen peas (or diced potatoes) and pour in 1 cup of water. Reduce the heat to low and let the curry simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes to develop the flavors and tenderize the ingredients.
- Finish with garam masala: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of garam masala over the curry and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, stirring well to incorporate the final spices.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from heat, garnish with freshly chopped cilantro, and serve hot with naan bread or steamed rice for a comforting meal.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with lamb or turkey depending on preference.
- Frozen peas can be replaced with diced potatoes or left out for a leaner version.
- Adjust the number of green chilies to control the spice level.
- For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of cream or yogurt before finishing.
- This dish can be made in advance and reheated; flavors deepen overnight.
