Description

Hanky Panky is a deliciously gooey, savory appetizer featuring a flavorful blend of ground beef, sausage, and melted Velveeta cheese seasoned with spices. Served warm on cocktail rye bread and optionally garnished with fresh parsley, this easy-to-make recipe is perfect for gatherings or as a comfort food snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 16 oz Velveeta cheese, cubed
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

To Serve

  • Cocktail rye bread
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the assembled appetizer later on.
  2. Brown the meat: Heat a large pan over medium heat and cook the ground beef and ground sausage until fully browned and cooked through.
  3. Drain and return meat: Drain excess fat from the pan, then return the cooked meat back to the pan to continue the recipe.
  4. Add cheese and seasonings: Add the cubed Velveeta cheese, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, oregano, and Worcestershire sauce into the pan. Lower the heat to medium-low and stir continuously until the cheese melts completely and the mixture is uniform.
  5. Assemble on bread: Place about one tablespoon of the warm meat and cheese mixture onto each piece of cocktail rye bread and arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake: Bake the assembled rye bread pieces in the preheated oven for about 6 minutes, or until the cheese topping starts bubbling and is hot throughout.
  7. Garnish and serve: Optionally sprinkle chopped parsley over the baked Hanky Panky for a fresh, colorful finish before serving.

Notes

  • Use cocktail rye bread for authentic flavor and perfect bite-sized portions.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
  • Make sure to stir the cheese mixture constantly on low heat to prevent scorching.
  • Serve immediately after baking for the best gooey texture.
  • Can be kept warm in the oven on low heat if preparing for a party.
