Description

Hobo Casserole is a hearty and comforting dish featuring layers of seasoned ground beef, sliced potatoes, creamy mushroom sauce, and melted cheddar cheese. This easy-to-make casserole is a delicious and budget-friendly meal that the whole family will love.


Ingredients

Ground Beef:

1 pound;

Onion, diced:

1 small;

Potatoes, thinly sliced:

3 cups (about 3 medium potatoes);

Cream of Mushroom Soup:

1 (10.5-ounce can);

Milk:

1/2 cup;

Cheddar Cheese, shredded:

1 cup;

Garlic Powder:

1/2 teaspoon;

Paprika:

1/2 teaspoon;

Salt and Black Pepper:

to taste;

Olive Oil or Butter:

1 tablespoon for greasing the dish;

Optional Garnish:

Chopped parsley or green onions


Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until browned. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Drain excess grease.
  3. Prepare Soup Mixture: Whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Layer half of the potatoes, beef mixture, and soup in the baking dish. Repeat layers.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil, add shredded cheese, and bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until cheese is melted and potatoes are tender.
  6. Rest and Serve: Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.

Notes

  • You can use cream of chicken soup or a homemade version as a substitute.
  • Ground turkey or sausage can be used as alternatives to ground beef.
