Description

This simple and delicious Mushrooms in a Sour Cream Sauce recipe features tender sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions combined in a creamy, tangy sour cream sauce. Perfect as a flavorful side dish or topping, this quick recipe yields a comforting dish that’s ready in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 lb mushrooms (baby bella’s, cremini, or button mushrooms)
  • 1 medium onion or 2 small onions
  • Chopped green onion (optional for garnish)

Other Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp sour cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Finely chop the onions and slice the mushrooms into 1/4 inch thick pieces to ensure even cooking and maximum flavor release.
  2. Sauté Onions: Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil in a medium non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook for a few minutes until they turn golden and caramelized, enhancing their natural sweetness.
  3. Sauté Mushrooms: In a separate large pan, heat the remaining 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are soft and tender. If the mushrooms release excess liquid, drain it off, leaving a little juice to retain moisture and flavor.
  4. Combine and Finish: Add the cooked onions to the mushrooms, stirring to combine. Remove from heat, then stir in 3 tablespoons of sour cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped green onion if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Drain excess mushroom juice to avoid a watery sauce, but keep a little for moisture and flavor.
  • Use baby bella or cremini mushrooms for richer flavor compared to button mushrooms.
  • Optional green onion garnish adds freshness and a subtle crunch.
  • Adjust sour cream quantity to preference for creaminess.
  • Serve as a side dish, over grains, or as a topping for meats or toasted bread.
