Description

These Pumpkin & Flaxseed Dental Sticks are homemade, nutritious treats designed to promote dental health in dogs. Combining fiber-rich pumpkin puree with ground flaxseed and wholesome oat flour, these crunchy sticks help support digestion and keep your pup’s teeth clean. Easy to make and using simple ingredients, they are a delightful addition to your dog’s treat rotation.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée (unsweetened, no spices)
  • 1 1/2 cups oat flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1-2 tablespoons water (if needed for dough consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin purée and the egg, stirring until smooth and well incorporated.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Add the oat flour and ground flaxseed to the wet mixture. Stir to combine, forming a dough. If the dough is too dry, add water 1 tablespoon at a time until a firm, workable dough forms.
  4. Roll Out Dough: Lightly flour a flat surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness to ensure the sticks bake evenly and become crunchy.
  5. Cut Sticks: Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into approximately 20 to 24 sticks of your desired size for your dog.
  6. Bake: Place the sticks on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until they are dry and crispy.
  7. Cool: Remove from oven and allow the dental sticks to cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog to ensure they harden sufficiently.
  8. Storage: Store the cooled dental sticks in an airtight container for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • Ensure the pumpkin purée is plain and unsweetened to keep the treats safe for your dog.
  • Use oat flour for a gluten-free option; whole wheat flour can be used if your dog does not have gluten sensitivities.
  • Adjust water quantity carefully; dough should be firm but not sticky.
  • Always supervise your dog when they are enjoying any chew or dental stick.
  • Consult with your vet before introducing new treats to your dog’s diet, especially if they have allergies or dietary restrictions.
