Cheese Sauce Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese of choice)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Pinch of paprika or cayenne (optional)
Instructions
- Make the Roux: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a smooth paste without browning it.
- Add the Milk: Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, which should take about 3–5 minutes.
- Incorporate Cheese and Seasonings: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese along with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings like garlic powder or paprika. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is silky smooth.
- Serve Immediately: Use the cheese sauce right away as a topping for pasta, vegetables, nachos, or as a creamy dip.
Notes
- Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melting quality and smooth texture.
- Feel free to substitute cheddar with mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a cheese blend to suit your dish.
