Description

Spam Musubi Bake is a delicious, layered casserole inspired by the traditional Hawaiian Spam musubi. It combines marinated Spam slices with seasoned rice and crispy nori sheets, baked to perfection for a savory and comforting dish perfect for family dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale

Spam Marinade

  • 1 can (12 oz) Spam
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup mirin
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked white rice
  • 1 cup nori (seaweed) sheets

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the Spam Musubi Bake.
  2. Make Marinade: In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, sugar, mirin, sesame oil, garlic powder, and ginger powder over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely, forming a flavorful marinade.
  3. Marinate Spam: Slice the Spam into 8 equal pieces and place them into the marinade. Let the slices soak for 15-20 minutes to absorb the savory flavors.
  4. Prepare Baking Dish: Lay one sheet of nori on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. This acts as the base layer for the bake.
  5. Layer Rice: Evenly spread half of the cooked white rice over the nori sheet, creating a uniform layer.
  6. Add Spam: Arrange the marinated Spam slices over the rice in a single layer, ensuring even distribution.
  7. Top with Rice: Cover the Spam slices with the remaining cooked rice, gently pressing down to compact the layers slightly.
  8. Add Second Nori Sheet: Place another nori sheet on top of the rice layer, pressing down lightly to secure the layers.
  9. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the nori becomes slightly crispy and the bake is heated through.
  10. Cool: Remove the Spam Musubi Bake from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes to set.
  11. Slice: Using a sharp knife, cut the bake into individual servings suitable for plating or sharing.
  12. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy this flavorful, comforting Spam Musubi Bake!

Notes

  • Ensure the Spam slices are evenly marinated for maximum flavor impact.
  • Use freshly cooked and slightly sticky white rice to help the bake hold its shape.
  • Adjust the baking time if needed to achieve crispier nori on top.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.
