Cake
- 2 boxes butter cake mix
- 2 cups water
- 2/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 6 large eggs
Frosting
- 3 cups unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
- 1 ½ cups malted milk powder
- 7 cups powdered sugar
Decoration
- 2 boxes Whopper candy (half crushed and set aside)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven as per the cake mix instructions. In a large bowl, combine 2 boxes of butter cake mix with 2 cups of water, 2/3 cup softened unsalted butter, and 6 large eggs. Mix thoroughly until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- Bake the Cake Layers: Divide the batter evenly between prepared cake pans. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting.
- Make the Malted Cocoa Buttercream: In a large mixing bowl, beat 3 cups softened unsalted butter until fluffy. Add 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 ½ cups malted milk powder, mixing well. Gradually add 7 cups powdered sugar alternated with 2 ½ cups heavy whipping cream, beating until light and creamy.
- Prepare Chocolate Ganache: In a small saucepan, gently heat 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream until warm. Pour over 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Let sit for a few minutes, then stir until smooth. Let cool slightly before using.
- Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on your serving plate and spread a generous layer of malted cocoa buttercream on top. Sprinkle half of the crushed Whopper candies evenly over the frosting. Repeat layering with remaining cake and frosting. Coat the entire cake with remaining buttercream, then drizzle the chocolate ganache on top. Decorate with remaining whole Whopper candies. Refrigerate to set before serving.
Notes
- Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream.
- For best texture, use room temperature butter and eggs.
- Crushed Whoppers add crunch; adjust amount based on preference.
- The chocolate ganache adds a luxurious finish but can be omitted if desired.
- Store leftover cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
